Balch’s Bridge crosses the Ipswich River on Salem Road and is believed to have been the first bridge built in Topsfield, MA. It has also been known as the Town Bridge, Wooden Bridge, and Walsh’s Bridge and was first mentioned in court records in 1653 as “the great bridg which the said Walter Ropper built…”
The original wooden bridge underwent several major repairs throughout the years and was replaced by a cement structure in 1932.
