Page history last edited by abrandenburg@mvlc.org 6 years, 8 months ago

An advertisement appeared in the Salem Gazette on February 6, 1818.

The Farmers and others in the County of Essex, who are desirous of promoting the Agricultural interests, are requested to meet at the Hotel in Topsfield on Monday, the 16th day of February current at eleven o'clock A.M. for the purpose of forming an AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY FOR THE COUNTY OF ESSEX, in aid of the Massachusetts Agricultural Society.  As the object of the meeting is important, it is hoped there will be a very general attendance. (The Historical Collections of the Topsfield Historical Society, Vol. XII, p. 111.)

About twenty "practical farmers" attended this meeting and appointed a committee of five to form the Society.  On Monday, February 16th, the Essex Agricultural Society was formed with Ichabod Tucker, Esq. chosen as Moderator; David Cummins, Secretary; and Hon. Nehemiah Cleaveland of Topsfield, Treasurer. The next meeting was set to be held at the "Hotel in Topsfield on the first Wednesday of May, next at 11 o'clock, A.M." (The Historical Collections of the Topsfield Historical Society, Vol. XII, p. 112.)

The Essex Agricultural Society owns the Topsfield Fair, the oldest continuously operating agricultural fair in the United States.
