Page history last edited by N.R. 9 years, 8 months ago

Charles H. Holmes, born December 1, 1810 in Alfred, York County, Maine, was the son of John Holmes (United States Senator from Maine) and Sarah Ann (Brooks) Holmes.

After receiving degrees from Bowdoin College and Brown University, Charles opened a law practice in Cornishville, Maine.  On March 26, 1836, he married Harriet J. Emerson of Topsfield, Massachusetts.  Charles and Harriet inherited the home at 9 East Common Street in Topsfield from her father, Joseph Emerson.

Widowed in 1849, Charles Henry Holmes died in Topsfield on July 14, 1886.  Holmes is remembered, in part, for his height and poetic works.
